Thousands flee as fires devastate Tasmania

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 05 Januari 2013 | 21.51

Tasmanian Fire Service has issued an emergency warning alert for the fire on the Tasman Hwy, Bicheno.

THE major fire at Bicheno in Tasmania's east has been downgraded and the Tasman Highway has been reopened.

The Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) has issued an ''advice'' alert level for the fire, which was earlier classified at an emergency warning level.

The TFS says the fire danger rating in the area is low to moderate, and there is no immediate threat to communities.

The Tasman Highway has been re-opened and motorists are being urged to be cautious due to possible smoke and emergency services vehicles in the area.

The fire is still not under control and authorities say people may experience embers, smoke and ash falling on Coles Bay Road, south of Apsley River, and the Tasman Highway, south of Bicheno.

Back burning off the Cole Bay Road will continue through the night and residents are advised that they should not be alarmed if there is more smoke in this area.

Earlier, the fire at Forcett, east of Hobart, was downgraded to a watch and act level as cooler weather spread across the island state.

The Forcett fire, which has scorched about 15,000 hectares, was earlier classified at an Emergency Warning level.

More than a dozen properties have been lost south of Bicheno, with more than a 100 feared lost overall.

Victoria was planning to send 65 firefighters to help tonight.

Thousands flee areas of Tasmania as fires spread

The Tasman Peninsula fire claimed at least 80 properties and left thousands of people isolated yesterday night.

Police and commercial boats were being used to ferry in supplies and ferry out people most in need.

No deaths or serious injuries have yet been confirmed, but Deputy Police Commissioner Scott Tilyard earlier said a team was on the ground at Dunalley to investigate a fire crew's concerns that a man may have been trapped while trying to defend his house.

Dozens of homes have been destroyed by bushfires in the Australian island state of Tasmania. Paul Chapman reports.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the federal government was supporting the fire effort.

''We are working with the state government to support people and make sure that they get through,'' Ms Gillard told ABC radio.

''My message is there's only one you.

''Everything else in life at the end of the day, no matter how precious, can be replaced.

''What can't be replaced is a human life.''

Insurers declared the bushfire-hit towns a catastrophe and police powers were increased when the Tasman Peninsula was declared a serious-incident site.

The Insurance Industry Council of Australia's declaration included the towns of Dunalley, Connellys Marsh, Forcett, Copping, Murdunna, Boomer Bay, Primrose Sands, Susans Bay, Eaglehawk Neck and Taranna.

Electricity company Aurora told people whose power had been cut off to expect delays of several weeks before it was restored.

About 300 poles were down on the Tasman Peninsula.

Property losses from the peninsula fire have been huge, with 30 per cent of the buildings in the small community of Dunalley, 55km southeast of Hobart, destroyed.

These included the school, police station and bakery.

At Connellys Marsh, 40 per cent of the buildings are gone, including three houses at Copping and several at Primrose Sands.

Reports of a death in a huge bushfire in the Tas town of Dunalley as up to 65 buildings have been damaged.

Twenty houses have been lost around Murdunna.

Several thousand people, many of them tourists, are stranded with access roads closed.

Around 700 are taking refuge at the Port Arthur historic site, another 2000 at a community centre at Nubeena and more than 50 at the Dunalley pub.

And a flotilla of boats is the lifeline for thousands of people stranded on the Tasman Peninsula as bushfires continue to rage out of control.

Recreational and commercial vessels are being used to bring in thousands of meals and other essential supplies and to evacuate people most in need.

Police said today that 600 people, many of them visitors to the area, were set to spend a second night at convict ruins.

There were 2000 people at a temporary refuge in Nubeena and another 100 at the Dunalley Hotel.

The road into the peninsula, the Arthur Highway, has been closed since Friday.

Boats delivered 3000 meals as well as fuel, water and health workers.

A generator was being sought as power is out in much of the area.

Acting police commissioner Scott Tilyard said he was hopeful some vehicles could be escorted from the peninsula.

He said tourists were obviously keen to get out.

It had been ''a long night for many people but the main thing is that they have been safe'', he said.

Up to 1000 people were reported to have been taken out by boat overnight, but police could not confirm the number.

''I would imagine there'll be numerous stories about the heroic and risky approaches that were taken out there,'' TFS chief commissioner Mike Brown said.

No deaths or serious injuries have been confirmed.

A fire in the Derwent Valley northwest of Hobart was affecting the communities of Ellendale and Karanja, but the extent of property damage was unknown.

Conditions across southern Tasmania today were cooler than yesterday, when Hobart reached 41.8C - its hottest since record keeping began in 1883.

State fire chief Mike Brown said similar conditions in 1967 had resulted in the loss of 2000 homes and 62 lives.

''I would imagine there'll be numerous stories about the heroic and risky approaches that were taken out there,'' he said.

Hobart, Melbourne and Adelaide are all sweltering with temperatures over forty degrees

''The big outcome for us ... is that at the moment there looks to be no loss of life or injuries.''

He said this was because of the way ''we put out our warnings, and clearly a lot of people did heed those warnings''.

People concerned about relatives and friends can call a police hotline on 1800 567 567.

SA prepares for continued threat

A number of total fire bans have been implemented across South Australia.

The bans will be in place tomorrow in the Northwest Pastoral, Northeast Pastoral, West Coast, Flinders, Mid North and Yorke Peninsula districts.

Today, 50 fire crews controlled flare-ups from a controlled bushfire on South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula as the threat of more fires across the state eased.

A bushfire at Finniss was brought under control late on Friday night, with firefighters remaining in the area to control flare-ups.

Adelaide sweltered through its fourth-hottest day on record yesterday, while temperatures soared past 48C in some parts of the state.

CFS state co-ordinator Malim Watts said people needed to remain vigilant.

Total fire bans have been issued in three districts today, with severe fire conditions forecast in the Northeast Pastoral, Northwest Pastoral and Flinders districts.

The Bureau of Meteorology said temperatures in Adelaide would drop to the low 30s on Saturday but forecast a return to very hot conditions for most of next week.

Victorian fire latest

A body has been found following a house fire near Kerang in northern Victoria.
Firefighters were called to a house on Kerang-Murrabit Road at Capels Crossing just before 4pm (AEDT) today and were searching debris when they found the body.

Police and fire investigators are examining the scene.

Meanwhile, Victorian firefighters are making the most of cooler conditions as they battle to bring two out-of-control bushfires within containment lines.

A total of 38 trucks and several aircraft were at the scene of a major bushfire at Kentbruck, in the state's southwest today.

The blaze northeast of Portland, between Port Fairy and the small town of Nelson next to the South Australian border, ignited about 18km southeast of the Mt Richmond National Park along the Princes Hwy yesterday afternoon.

State Control Centre spokeswoman Sonia Maclean said no homes or property were threatened by the fire, and aircraft account of the scene overnight had revealed the blaze was tearing through the pine forest and had swelled further than the 1200ha circumference initially reported.

A precautionary advice message was issued to Portland residents and nearby communities earlier this morning.

"Coming into the daylight, aerial crews have been able to establish a better indication of the fire and it appears it is across 2000ha, but it has also spread quite quickly," she said.

"The issue in fighting this tricky fire is that the ground is wet and quite boggy so firefighters are using an air-focused attack.

Smoke sightings of the inferno have been reported from as far away as Hamilton, about 85km northeast of the blaze.

CFA spokesman Chris Clugston said campgrounds Lake Monibeong and Swan Lake were evacuated and the Cobboboonee National Park was closed.

Meanwhile, residents of Ensay, in East Gippsland, were told to remain vigilant as a blaze burned out of control around 7km north of the town.

A CFA spokeswoman said crews hoped to have both fires under control this afternoon.

''The crews on the ground are putting measures in place to create containment lines and are doing some backburning,'' she told AAP.

No new bushfires were recorded today.

Temperatures today were much cooler than Friday, when the mercury peaked above 40C across much of the state.

Firefighters are on high alert with parts of Australia tipped to have seven days above 40C.

Work was also under way to restore Victoria's Country Fire Authority website to full capacity.

The crash occurred as the state sweltered through its hottest day in several years. At some points up to 700 people a second tried to access the website and FireReady App.

In a statement late on Friday, Victoria's fire services commissioner Craig Lapsley said he had asked CFA chief Mick Bourke to investigate why some people were still experiencing delays on the website.

Mr Lapsley said the CFA would work throughout the weekend to respond to the issue as a "key priority".

"We recognise it has been frustrating for people who rely on the website and app for fire information," he said.

"Seeking out the appropriate information is exactly what we have been asking the community to do and we know people are relying on this technology to keep themselves updated about their fire risk."

The capacity of the website and the FireReady App were increased after the crash.

Work is under way to restore Victoria's Country Fire Authority website to full capacity.

Mr Lapsley says important fire information is also available from ABC radio, SKY NEWS, and CFA social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter as well as the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.

NSW fought bushfire 'deliberately lit'

The NSW Rural Fire Service has established total fire bans in the northern and southern Riverina districts and the lower and upper Central West plains.

The bans come into effect from midnight and end midnight Sunday.

A fire service spokesman said the fire risk would ease on Monday but would again escalate on Tuesday.

Today firefighters fought a blaze on the mid-north coast in the Booti Booti National Park near Forster, forcing the closure of roads in the area and isolating the town of Green Point.

The fire has been brought under control.

Teens charged over another arson attack

Specialist crime scene officers and Fire Investigators from the Rural Fire Service will examine the area today to pinpoint what caused the fire, which are being treated as suspicious.

Police from Manning Great Lakes are appealing for public assistance as they continue their inquiries into the incident.

All roads have now been reopened.

But while the heat records tumbled across the country - including Thursday's 48.2C scorcher in the Nullarbor border town of Eucla - only sea-breezy Sydney was bringing the nation's average top temperature down.

Sydney city hit a high of just 26.6C yesterday, and 34C in the west, compared with peak temperatures of 45.1C in Wilcannia and 45C in Bourke in the state's far northwest.

SE Queensland escapes worst of heat

Southeast Queensland escaped the brunt of the heatwave, but areas to to the west were not so lucky.

Locals in the western Queensland town of Birdsville reported the 47.3C temperatures made it too hot to even go to the pub for a thirst quencher.

Brisbane and the Gold and Sunshine coasts recorded temperatures of around 30C, but Weather bureau senior forecaster Michelle Berry said temperatures in the west soared to 7C above average.

"We were one of the cooler capital cities," Ms Berry said.

"Many other capitals had a very hot day, but Brisbane had mild temperatures."

METROPOLITAN beaches have been reopened after almost three hours of closure due to five tiger sharks spotted metres from the coast.

Beachers from City Beach to Trigg were closed after sightings of tiger sharks ranging from two to three metres.

The first tiger shark was spotted at Floreat Beach about 8am.

Three of the deadly sharks were then spotted at Trigg Beach about 8.30am and one other at Scarborough soon after.

At 11am all of the beaches were reopened after no further sightings by the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter.

The Department of Fisheries, SLSWA and local authorities have also responded to shark sightings at Indijup Point and Meelup Beach in WA's south west this morning.

Meanwhile, Premier Colin Barnett has announced the state government will contribute $300,000 for an observation tower to enable surf lifesavers at Cottesloe Beach to better monitor conditions.

The Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club has identified a site at the foot of the Cottesloe groyne as the best place to build a tower, which will give an almost 270-degree view. With binoculars, lifesavers will be able to see several kilometres up and down the coastline.

WA dad stabbed in Bali an 'ironman'

An Australian man reportedly threw a thief through a window before he was stabbed during a robbery in Bali.

AN Australian man woken by the screams of his wife at their holiday villa in Bali was stabbed by a robber as he wrestled with another intruder during the terrifying night-time raid.

Father-of-two Paul Gill hurled one assailant through a window before being left in a bloodied heap by repeated blows from the knife of the second man.

The 41-year-old, described as an ''ironman'' by his friends, is recovering in the intensive care unit of a local hospital after having emergency surgery following the horrifying ordeal in Canggu on Friday.

Family and friends at the Bali International Medical Centre told News Limited today that Mr Gill was improving and would pull through.

''He's a strong guy," one said.

''He'll get through this. He is an ironman - one of the fittest guys I know. Tall and strong."

Mr Gill's wife Jacqui did not want to talk to the media at the hospital today but said her husband was getting better and the family would be staying in Bali during his recovery.

Mr Gill's brother-in-law Adam Crook wrote on Facebook: "I thank every second I breathe that he was able to defend himself, my sister and two nieces. He's stable and will recover in time. Thank the Lord."

The holiday nightmare unfolded at about 2am on Friday as Mr Gill, his wife Jacqui and two daughters slept in their upmarket villa in North Kuta.

Some friends from Perth were also staying.

Police said the robbers scaled a wall of the villa before breaking a window and entering the Gills's bedroom.

They stole several items, including an iPad, before Mrs Gill was woken and started screaming.

A scuffle broke out which saw Mr Gill, a boat captain of a European luxury vessel, throw one man through the window before he was stabbed multiple times, including in the lung, by the other man.

The two robbers escaped before the other guests at the villa rushed upstairs.

A bloodied Mr Gill was rushed to the hospital, suffering serious wounds to his neck, shoulder and lower back.

Hospital official Roland Staehler said doctors expected Mr Gill to make a full recovery.

"He won't be out of hospital very quickly, but the recovery looks promising," he said.

"He arrives in a very critical condition and we were able to organise surgery very quickly.

"The surgery went well, he is in a stable condition. He was rather lucky considering the seriousness of the wounds and we expect a good recovery."

No one else was hurt in the incident.

Authorities are still hunting the attackers.

Indonesian police will speak to Mr Gill once he is well enough.

Badung Police Station Chief Komang Suartana said Mr Gill's wife had told police two men were responsible for the attack.

Police hoped Mr Gill would help them identify the attackers once he was well enough to speak.

Mr Suartana said the attackers had managed to evade two security guards on a rainy night.
He said burglary was the motive.

''The perpetrators chose the villa because the security is not very strict compared to other tourism destinations.

''The perpetrators are still in Bali and we're tightening the exit gate from Bali.''

Bali's Provincial Governor, Made Mangu Pastika, said he was saddened by the incident.

''There's got to be real measures taken to catch the perpetrators. I will talk to (Bali) provincial police to increase security so that such incidents won't happen again that could taint Bali's image.''

The scene of the crime, Villa Chloe, is nearby to the property where Brisbane woman Denni North was found dying last Sunday.

It is said to be a quiet, secluded holiday spot, located between rice paddy fields and high-end accommodation.

A relative of the Gill's guests, who did not want to be named, said his son and wife were sleeping downstairs and found Mr Gill after the attack.

"He caught one guy but didn't know there was another who came up from behind and stabbed him," he told The West Australian newspaper.

"The family are really shaken but they're OK."

The terrifying case bears some hallmarks of an attack on Australian mother-of-three Michelle Smith last June during an attempted robbery on the Thai resort island of Phuket.

The 60-year-old Perth woman died after being stabbed in the chest before her two assailants rode off on a motorbike.

Two local men were later sentenced to life in prison for murder and robbery.

Teens embrace new secret sexting craze

Teenagers have embraced a new worldwide sensation tempting them into sending "safe" self-destructing sex images on smartphones. Source: News Limited

PERTH teenagers are caught in the grip of a new worldwide sensation tempting them into sending "safe" self-destructing sex images on smartphones.

The craze has gone viral, prompting WA police and child-protection agencies to alert parents to the dangers of the mobile phone app called Snapchat.

The site has become so popular that social media giant Facebook has tried to replicate the app, which allows teens to view images and video for just seconds before they automatically "disappear".

The free app is billed as perfect for "safe sexting" but the claimed safeguards can be easily overridden, allowing those receiving the intimate photos and videos to save them permanently.

With most parents having no idea, teens around the world have already sent more than one billion "snaps" since the app was launched late last year.

Almost 20 million snaps a day are now being sent.

WA Police's Online Child Exploitation Squad warned yesterday that there was no guarantee the messages would remain private.

"There is always the risk of sexually explicit images being further distributed via mobile phone or the internet," Det-Sen-Sgt Lindsay Garratt said.

"Teenagers are best advised to protect themselves from exploitation by simply not transmitting sexual images of themselves in the first place."

Child Protection Minister Robyn McSweeney said parents should be aware that apps like Snapchat carried the risk of being used inappropriately.

"Parents need to keep an open line of communication with their children," she said.

Curtin University internet studies lecturer Tama Leaver said Snapchat was more popular than Facebook Poke because users did not have to give their real names.

"There is clearly a demand for applications that let people share material in a more anonymous sense than they would using conventional technology like Facebook," he said.

A VICTIM of a home invasion has told how he narrowly escaped being stabbed to death by three masked men who beat him in his own bed.

Merriwa resident Jarrod, who did not want his surname published, woke up at 8am yesterday to find three men in ski masks standing over him.

The 24-year-old said his girlfriend had left the house in Goyder Elbow only an hour earlier and he was still sleeping at the time.

Jarrod said he had no idea how his attackers got into the house and believed the assault was a case of mistaken identity because he had only moved into the house days earlier.

"I spent my first night here and woke up to a beating," he said.

The young man said he felt angry and was not sure if he was going to stay at the house.

"I copped a beating that wasn't mine," he said.

"I'm not sure if I really want to stay here, I don't really know what the situation is, who stayed here previously what trouble they got themselves into."

When Jarrod woke, he originally thought it was a friend.

"I was asleep and I was woken up by my door opening and there's three guys in ski-masks and I thought it was a prank, one of my mates playing a joke," he said.

"The one of them wound up and punched in the face and then they all jumped on me and started relentlessly punching me."

During the assault, the men kept asking Jarrod for money, which he knew nothing about, and then they started to strangle him.

"I managed to kick them off and then one of them pulled a knife out of his pocket and flicked it open and said he was going to stab me in the throat repeatedly," he said.

"One of the other ones said 'he doesn't know anything, let's get out of here' and they left.

"I was just thinking 'fight for your life' I thought they were there to kill me."

On their way out the trio took Jarrod's phone and he waited momentarily before bolting through the hall and laundry to jump the fence and ask the neighbours for help.

Clarkson Detectives are now calling on the public to help find the men.

"We believe it was a targeted attack and we believe the victim was not the intended target," Detective First Class Constable Nathan Nunn said.

"We're appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

"Being 8 o'clock in the morning we're thinking people might have been driving on their way to work and seen somebody approaching the house."

All of the male offenders were wearing ski-masks over the faces.

One is described as fair skinned, is of a stocky build, about 170cm tall and was wearing a white jumper.

The second man was wearing a green jumper and had a long ginger goatee and a tattoo on his right wrist

There is no description at this stage of the third man.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

POLICE say there is no longer any danger posed to Willetton residents, after streets were in lockdown for three hours because of a potential shooting threat.

A bailiff who visited the house at the corner of Albatross Pass and Woodpecker Avenue just after 3pm to repossess items alerted police after hearing one shot fired from within the house.

Officers from the Tactical Response Group swarmed the house at 6pm after there was no response to attempted negotiations.

An elderly man's body was discovered inside the home near the front door.

An internal police investigation into the incident will be conducted.

While police were assessing the potential threat to public safety, nearby residents were asked to remain in their homes, stay away from their windows and follow all directions from police, but a crowd of onlookers gathered in the street behind police roadblocks.

Neighbours have told PerthNow the street is usually quiet. They were unaware of anyone living in the home from which the shot was fired.

Teen critical after Lombok methanol drink

A WA teenager is fighting for his life in a Perth hospital suffering methanol poisoning from a drink he consumed on the Indonesian island of Lombok, near Bali.

Liam Davies, 19, had been celebrating with mates on New Year's Day when he became sick after drinking an alcoholic beverage at a bar on the holiday island.

He was taken to a local hospital for treatment. After consultation with Australian specialists, a decision was made to airlift him to Perth's Sir Charles Gairdner in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A hospital spokesperson says he remains in a critical condition on life support.

Davies' family has released a statement, describing him as a "fun loving and active 19-year-old, who has has represented his country in lacrosse, and has dreams of travelling abroad to see the world."

They have urged other Australians to be careful while travelling overseas.

"We would like to make people aware of the risks associated with consuming locally brewed drinks where you cannot be certain of the quality," the statement said.

Methanol is a toxic chemical that is sometimes added to cheap drinks to make them more alcoholic.

Hundreds of readers have written to PerthNow, either wishing Liam well and warning others of the risks inexperienced young travellers face, or defending or criticising the holiday island.

Some readers have used the forum to attack young holidaymakers for their excesses, prompting "Auntie'' to defend the victim in this case: "He is only 19!,'' she wrote. Going to Bali after saving up to celebrate coming out of his four-year apprenticeship along with the New Year and to catch up with the father and a friend he played with when representing Australia in the U.S playing Lacrosse . . .

"If he (Liam) wanted to go to Bali to experience a bit of the world popular with the Aussies, he should be able to with the confidence of returning home safely. Two weeks ago this boy has the world at his feet and we pray this will not change. What happened is absolutely tragic and maybe you could all stop being so quick to judge the innocent and send Liam and his family your prayers for a fast full recovery.''

Last year prominent Perth rugby player Michael Denton died in Bali. An autopsy ruled that the cause of death was methanol poisoning.

Last month a Sydney teenager was blinded after drinking a cocktail laced with methanol during schoolies celebrations in Bali.

In June, Swedish backpacker Swede Johan Lundin, 28, was poisoned by a mojito laced with methanol on an island off Lombok.

His death prompted his fiance to warn Australians about the dangers of drink spiking in Indonesia.

Volunteer group Red Frogs, which provided support to school leavers during celebrations in Bali, said it knew of five leavers who were treated for suspected methanol poisoning last year, but suspects the real number was much higher.

The effects of methanol poisoning can range from vomiting, headaches and gastric pain, to comas, liver failure and, in extreme cases, death. Blindness is also common - it can last a few hours or lead to permanent damage.

Billionaire Gina doubles riches with $1.2 billion profit

DOUBLE DELIGHT: Gina Rinehart, chair of Hancock Prospecting, gave into pressure from the corporate regulator and lodged two long-overdue annual reports for the 2010 and 2011 financial years on Christmas Eve. Source: The Daily Telegraph

BILLIONAIRE Gina Rinehart's company Hancock Prospecting posted a massive $1.2 billion profit in 2010/11, almost doubling its previous profit, documents filed on Christmas Eve show.

The mining magnate, who was recently named the 39th richest person in the world, gave into pressure from the corporate regulator and lodged two long-overdue annual reports for the 2010 and 2011 financial years on December 24, 2012.

Publication of the financial reports comes two months after Ms Rinehart failed in a bid to dismiss court action brought by her three eldest children, who are trying to oust her as trustee of the multimillion dollar family trust.
Details of the private company's financial position were considered sensitive in the context of the family legal stoush.

Hancock's 2011 annual report showed profit attributable to owners of the private company rose to $1.19 billion for the 12 months to June 30, 2011, up from $688 million in 2009/10.

The report, lodged with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), noted that Hancock had net assets of $2.78 billion at June 30, 2011, up from $1.64 billion a year earlier.

Revenue was $2.37 billion in fiscal 2011, up from $1.41 billion in the prior year.

Dividends more than doubled, increasing to $12.49 million in 2011, up from $6.17 million in the prior year.
On top of that, the sale of the group's coal assets in Queensland to GVK in late 2011 raised $US735 million ($A705.37 million).

Hancock said it conducted a certain amount of exploration and production activities as part of its 50 per cent Hope Downs joint venture with mining giant Rio Tinto.

The 2011 annual report also showed Hancock still owed Rio Tinto $83.3 million, after paying back $25 million over the 2010/11 as part of an agreement to build its latest mine under the joint venture.

"The loans relate to funds advanced to the group by Rio Tinto in relation to the funding of the group's share of the Hope Downs project expenditure, in accordance with agreements with Rio Tinto,'' the company said.
Hancock outlayed a massive $415 million in capital expenditure in the year ending June 30, 2011, up from $8.29 million in the previous year.

Meanwhile, marketing and royalty costs rose to $143 million in 2011, from $87 million in 2010. Income tax expenses rose from $295 million to $518 million, including $67 million in deferred tax.

The report also showed funds issued to a consortium of Korean and Japanese investors led by POSCO could be converted to an equity interest in Roy Hill Holdings' iron ore project in Western Australia's Pilbara region.
Hancock Prospecting owns about 70 per cent of Roy Hill Holdings, which is trying to build a large iron mine, along with railway track and port facilities.

In December, Hancock began raising up to $7 billion in debt to help fund its $10 billion Roy Hill project after the construction deadline was pushed back to mid-2013.

In a section of the report entitled Contingencies, Hancock said directors of the company were not able to assess the impact of native title claims in relation to Hope Downs.

Hancock also said it was unable to quantify if any damages could be awarded to a claim made by certain companies within the group in relations to royalties from the Hope Downs mine.

"There are no significant liabilities arising from such legal actions,'' the company said.

DETECTIVES have made a public plea for witnesses of a New Years Eve attack on a Swedish tourist in Northbridge to come forward.

Perth City Detectives are seeking information on the incident where the visitor was assaulted and robbed between 10.30pm and 11.15pm on Monday, December 31.

A 31-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man were standing on Stirling Street, opposite Villa Night Club, talking when they were approached by four dark skinned men.

The men pushed the woman and hit her in the face, attempting to grab her handbag and stole her mobile phone, passport and cash.

When the man went to her aid he was also assaulted and knocked unconscious.

As he lay on the ground he was kicked repeatedly to the head and body.

A member of the public who drove past intervened and the attackers fled and were last seen running through Weld Square towards Beaufort and Newcastle streets.

Police believe one of the offenders received a cut to his hand after he smashed a bottle.

Police are hoping as there were a lot of people in the area at the time celebrating the New Year anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to speak to police.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

THE mother of an alleged hit-and-run victim has remembered her 17-year-old son as 'a shining star' as the family comes to grips with their tragic loss.

The body of Tosh Kupa was found on Ennis Avenue, between Safety Bay Road and Wilmott Drive at about 4.30am on New Year's Day.

Tosh's parents, Lee and Leonie Kupa, told Nine News their son will be brought home for friends and family to say goodbye before his body is flown to New Zealand for burial.

Leonie Kupa described her son as 'a shining star' on Facebook after being told of his death.

Just hours earlier, Tosh was celebrating New Year's Eve with friends on the Rockingham foreshore, Nine News reports.

Police said the victim was standing or walking along Ennis Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle, which then failed to stop.

A 35-year-old Baldivis man has been charged with failing to stop, failing to report an accident and creating a false belief.

Police will alleged the man made a false report of his vehicle being stolen in relation to the fatal crash on Ennis Avenue.

The man's death was the second road-related fatality in the space of just a few hours into the New Year, following the death of an eight-year-old girl in a car accident near York.

The man charged will appear in the Rockingham Magistrates Court later this month.

Taxi driver's job safe despite 'intimacy'

A PERTH taxi driver has had his cab licence provisionally reinstated after he was accused of taking a suspected bank robber to his home and showering with her.

The driver, Tony Vaisi, was initially hailed as a hero for making a citizen's arrest after he picked the suspect up in November.

However, the Western Australia Department of Transport suspended his licence after admissions in his statement to police raised suspicions he had breached the taxi driver's code of conduct, which bans sexual advances towards a passenger.

Today, State Administrative Tribunal member Bertus de Villiers ruled Mr Vaisi could return to work until a final determination later this year.

The passenger is accused of a string of offences, including an armed robbery at knifepoint in Padbury, a car jacking and bank robberies in Dianella and Booragoon.

Mr Vaisi claimed at the SAT hearing the woman had held him hostage after entering his cab, and had forced him to drive her around.

But prosecutor Peter Busby told an earlier hearing an on-board recording from Mr Vaisi's cab showed he did not appear under duress, and his intention had been to persuade the woman to go to his home.

Once there, the hearing was told, Mr Vaisi had smoked cigarettes and drunk wine with her before showering and becoming intimate in his bedroom.

Mr Vaisi argued he had taken the woman to his house in an effort to gain her trust and to protect his safety.

"I am very happy with the decision ... I got my licence and my credibility back,'' Mr Vaisi said after today's hearing.

Home owners pocket rate cut savings

Homeowners are putting extra cash from interest rate cuts into their mortgage, according to a poll. Source: AAP

EVIDENCE is growing that mortgage-holders are saving cash freed up by interest rate cuts, rather than splurging it in the shops.

A recent poll by WA home builder Dale Alcock Homes shows that people are using the relief to pay off their mortgages sooner.

Some 82 per cent of respondents said they would not reduce their repayments following the December rate cut.

During the past 12 months, the Reserve Bank of Australia has cut the official cash rate by one full percentage point in a bid to stimulate the nation's economy by encouraging them to spend.

But the national retail outlook remains gloomy.

Dale Alcock Homes general manager Dean O'Rourke said the recent rate cut was a welcome Christmas present for many homeowners, but he wasn't surprised people would be paying off their loans with the money.

"Savvy homeowners realise just putting a little bit extra into their mortgage every month can save thousands of dollars in interest and cut years off the loan,'' he said.

United Community Credit Union state manager Michelle Coelho said keeping repayments stable helped people create a financial buffer.

Engineer Barry Tan moved into his home in three years ago and plans to keep his repayments the same.

"I can always access the extra funds when I wish to,'' he said.

"You will be surprised how a little extra per month can literally save you thousands of dollars in interest repayments.''

Australians are saving more than ever with the average household saving 9.5 per cent of their disposable income  almost double that of a decade ago, according to the RBA's financial stability review in September.

The same review found that home owners were paying down their mortgage quicker, giving themselves a buffer of about one-and-a-half years.

AMP financial adviser Claire Esmond agreed people were taking advantage of the low interest rates, with the cash rate the lowest since September 2009.

"People are realising interest rates are not going to stay that low forever so they are making a concerted effort to pay down as much of their mortgage as possible,'' she said.

CHARISMATIC French tennis player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga joined singer Marcia Hines on stage at the Hopman Cup Ball last night, busting out his best moves to Michael Jackson's Billie Jean.

And feisty Hines, 59, was forced to shove an overly amorous fan who attempted to gyrate against her on stage.

The incident was captured on the official Hopman Cup twitter page:  https://twitter.com/hopmancup/status/285758505049264128

Accompanied by the Perth Highland Pipe Band, Perth musicians James Morley and Pat Reale kicked off the night with AC/DC number, Long Way to the Top.

A touching ode to tennis great Harry Hopman, whom the cup was named after, received a standing ovation.

Serbian tennis player Ana Ivanovic, a stand-out in a glittering red Ruth Tarvydas dress, spoke of her time in WA.

"The first few days I had off so I went to the beach a lot. I was looking out for sharks," she said.

US tennis player Venus Williams, made up for being 90 minutes late when she arrived in a dazzling green sequinned dress.

Other players at the event included Aussie Bernard Tomic and Spain's Fernando Versasco.

Special guests included Lucy Hopman, the widow of Harry Hopman, and international TV commentator Fred Stolle.

And in an amusing anecdote, World No. 1 Novak Djokovic denied reports that he had purchased the world's supply of donkey cheese.

"I don't know how they can milk the donkey," he told 800 amused guests at the invite-only event.

Djokovic explained that the owner of a donkey cheese company had approached his father at their restaurant in Serbia and offered to sell his entire business.

But a deal was not done.

"The next thing I know, I see the paper writing that we bought the whole supply of donkey cheese," he said.

"I've never tried donkey cheese but I'm looking forward to trying donkey cheese.

"It costs 5000 euros if you want to take a bath in donkey milk."

Tournament director Steve Ayles praised Perth Arena's retractable roof, which has remained open throughout the cup.

He said that at one stage the roof kept the Arena at a comfortable 24 degrees, when temperatures soared to 42 degrees outside.

"One gentleman even complained it was a little cold in there," Ayles said.

A LONG-overdue end to Perth's summer heatwave has helped make conditions enjoyable for thousands of punters at this year's Perth Cup.

The annual event at Ascot Racecourse drew a wide variety of people, ranging from racing diehards to those simply keen to kick the new year off with a bang in a festival atmosphere.

Today's 30.8C maximum provided welcome relief for racegoers following a week of searing temperatures, including yesterday's 42.1C scorcher.

See our Perth Cup pics

The day's main event, the 2400m Perth Cup, was all set to be a shootout between race favourites Mr Moet and Cantonese.

But instead, it was late call-up Talent Show - part-owned by AFL footballer Hayden Ballantyne - that stole the show with a barnstorming win.

There was also plenty of colour to be found away from the track, with bikini models in the day's fashion parade finding a way to keep cool.

And as always, racegoers went to great lengths to ensure their own outfits were in top shape, with big hats, kilts, and Hawaiian-themed get-up spotted at the track.

Meanwhile, at a celebration of all things Cuban in Nedland, a strong crowd turned out for the New Year's Day Cuban Club celebrations.

PERTH has capped off 2012 with the hottest day of the year as the mercury tipped 42.1C late this afternoon.

It was easily the hottest day of the week-long heatwave and the equal warmest day of the year, with January 28, when the temperature also peaked at 42.1C.

But relief is in sight with 34C tipped for New Year's Day and a cool 27C on Wednesday.

The temperature dipped to 20.9C at 5.08am overnight after yesterday's high of 37.5C, which came around 10.30am, before a strong north-westerly wind cooled the city and prevented it reaching the expected 41C.

By 8.30am today the temperature had already raced to 33C in the city, heading toward the expected 39C top.

As the temperature in the city reached a blistering 41.6C at 1.22pm today, the winds swung around the south-west but a cool change did not eventuate.

It hovered around the 41C mark until just after 4pm before the sea breeze finally began taking effect.

Scorching heat was felt all over the metro area - Jandakot also hit 41, while Perth Airport reached 42.2C as most areas endured 39C-41C temperatures.

Just east of the city, Pearce topped out at 42.7 and Gingin hit 41.5C, while in Geraldton it was a stifling 43.9C at 12noon - the hottest spot in WA.

27C with a shower for Wednesday

Relief is on the way, with 34C tipped for tomorrow and a blissful 27C for Wednesday, with a morning shower forecast.

Early showers are also tipped for Thursday morning.

Maximum temperatures in Perth have not been below 37C since Christmas Day, when the temperature reached 39.6C, which has been followed by a series of 39C and 40C days.

Meanwhile much of the state has also been gripped by a the searing heatwave with temperatures in the north often around 40C and even through the South West and Great Southern where numerous centres recorded close to 40C yesterday, while Perth was spared the worst of the expected searing heat.

Coral Bay, Northam and Roebourne are the expected hotspots with a forecast top of 41C, but much of the north and inland of the state is expected to nudge 40C.

Fire Weather Warning in north

Baking heat in the north and inland of the state has prompted fire weather warnings for the following regions: East Pilbara, Interior, West Pilbara Coast, Gascoyne Inland, Coastal Central West - North and Inland Central West - North fire weather districts

"Very hot conditions, with fresh and gusty east to northeast winds east of a surface trough,'' the Bureau warns.

Major parties receive $5.7m in donations

WA's major political parties have been given more than $5 million in donations during 2011-12. Source: AdelaideNow

THE West Australian Liberal Party has received more than half of all political donations and gifts in the financial year leading up to the March 9 election.

The Electoral Commission says the Liberals received almost $3.9 million compared with the Australian Labor Party's total of $1.85 million and the Greens' $355,000.

But the National Party was the biggest improver, doubling donations and income in 2011-2012 to $1.33 million from its usual average of $600,000.

Despite having no members in parliament, the Australian Christians have also bolstered their financial support, from an average of about $200,000 a year to $281,000 this year.

The Liberal Party received the largest single gift of $250,000 from Furama Pty Ltd.

The ALP scored its two biggest contributions from union groups United Voice and the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association which totalled $215,000.

WA Electoral Commissioner Warwick Gately said overall party income was down from the previous financial year when $11.2 million was received, compared with the $7.6 million revealed in the latest figures.

Last year, the top 10 donations were each over $100,000, he said in a statement on Sunday.

"It is cyclical. At both state and federal levels, last financial year was between elections,'' Mr Gately said.

"But with potentially big donations in the lead-up to the March state poll I would expect receipts to jump significantly in the current year.''

No Mandurah line trains during peak hour

Mandurah train services have been disrupted by a power cable fault. Picture: file.
Source: PerthNow

TRAIN services on the Mandurah line are not expected to resume in time for peak hour commuters trying to get home.

Services on the Mandurah line were disrupted by a fault with an overhead power line, which occurred at about 12.25pm near the Murdoch station.

A Public Transport Authority spokesman issued an update at 3pm, stating that "trains are not expected to resume in time to get commuters home this afternoon."

The PTA hopes that normal services will be restored by about 9pm, in time to deliver Mandurah Line patrons to their New Year's Eve festivities and home again in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

Replacement buses between Rockingham Station and Perth will leave from Esplanade Station.

Trains are still running from Clarkson through to Esplanade and trains are also still operating between Rockingham and Mandurah.

It is still not known what caused the fault.

Earlier the PTA said: "Transperth is working hard to have the problem fixed as soon as possible but it is not known how long it will take to repair.

A number of trains were affected by the loss of power but all were at stations and the passengers were able to disembark.

The Joondalup line is running between Clarkson and Esplanade station with services adjusted to a 15-minute frequency.

All other train lines are unaffected.

MIRACLE: 14-year-old Dennis Dear arrives at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital after being airlifted by the RAC Rescue helicopter. He was found after 28 hours missing south-east of Perth. Picture: Richard Polden Source: PerthNow

SEARCHERS have found the teenager who went missing while quad biking with his father and friends in state forest about 80km south-east of Perth.

Dennis Dear was riding his quad bike with his father in state forest near Flint, about 80km southeast of Perth, at 9.30am on Sunday when he disappeared.

The teenager, believed to be suffering dehydration, was found this morning at about 11am, but is believed to be in relatively good health.

He was treated by paramedics and is being airlifted to hospital by the RAC Rescue helicopter.

The boy is being flown to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and will then be transfered to Princess Margaret Hospital.

It is believed he has been without water for more than 24 hours in extreme 40C temperatures yesterday and today, when the temperature climbed into the high 30Cs. At nearby Dwellingup it was 35C at 11am.

About 75 Department of DFES State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers assisted police in the search today.

Searchers found his abandoned quad bike late last night, but they did not locate the boy till mid-morning today.

The teenager has autism and cerebral palsy and police and searchers held grave fears for his safety.

He was camping with his father and friends near the Brookton Highway and was last seen early yesterday.

A large team of Police and SES volunteers, along with police airwing, were searching for the boy, who was reported missing around 9.30am Sunday morning.

Westerly winds spare Perth plus-40C day

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 30 Desember 2012 | 21.51

COOL DOWN: With temps set to continue around 40C, Perth beaches will be busy. Source: PerthNow

PERTH has been spared another plus-40C day but the heatwave is set to continue for at least the next two days.

After a minimum of 21.5C at 1.30am, the temperature quickly climbed and just after 10am it was already 37.5C, with an anticipated top of 41C.

But as the winds swung around to the north-west, the mercury plateaued and westerlies kept the heat down throughout the afternoon.

The blistering start to yesterday followed an uncomfortable night when the mercury dipped -- barely -- to 27.3C at 12.34am.

By 10am the temperature in Perth had already reached 36C and the 40.5C top came at 1.36pm yesterday.

Perth Airport reached 40.4C just before noon. Jandakot was 39.6C by just after midday.

Pearce, 45km from Perth, was the metro region's hotspot with a blistering 42.1C, which came at 2.30pm and Gingin, 80km north of Perth, reached 41.2C by early afternoon.

Last night's {13568537946350}{13568537946351}{13568537946352}minimum of 21.5C was recorded at 1.30am this morning.

Heatwave to last till Wednesday

The stifling heatwave gripping Perth will continue until at least Wednesday.

Authorities have warned people to drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and coffee and stay indoors where possible.

St John Ambulance has reported a spike in calls for heat-related emergencies and Surf Life Saving WA said it was battling a surge in beach rescues.

Metropolitan hospitals are admitting about 10 patients a day with heat-caused ailments.

SLSWA chief executive Paul Andrew said it had conducted 25 rescues, 254 first-aid procedures and 1180 preventative actions since the heatwave started on Christmas Day.

State Health Co-ordinator Tarun Weeramanthri has warned that the heatwave's dangers would worsen as it drags on.

"Effects build up over a number of days and people eventually become exhausted, especially with warm nights," he said.

"So you actually have to become more aware and more vigilant, as the risk increases the longer the heatwave goes on.

"The vulnerable groups are the elderly, particularly over the age of 65, the very young, and those with medical conditions."

Dr Weeramanthri said people should drink at least two litres of water a day, avoid alcohol and caffeine and use common sense when they were celebrating on New Year's Eve.

AN abalone diver has drowned about 500m north of Cape Leeuwin in WA's South-West this morning.

It's believed the man, in his early 40s, is originally from Sichuan Province in China and had been living in Perth for about six years.

The man was diving with a group of about 10 other amateur abalone divers, who were all of Asian origin and spoke English poorly.

One of the victim's friends, Bruce, said they had only recently met the victim and and they believed he was a poor swimmer.

"Not so good, swimming," he said.

Tourists leaving the nearby lighthouse were flagged down by members of the diving group when the man went missing at about 10am.

Police said the victim's friends pulled him to shore where paramedics performed CPR for more than 45 minutes but he died at the scene.

The victim's friends said the group had been diving in Lighthouse Bay since 6am and the man had been in water for about three and a half hours.

The ocean conditions were not considered dangerous, with a moderate swell and a 10-12kn southerly wind.

The group were using snorkels that had tubing attached for greater diving depth and inner tubes for buoyancy.

Augusta police and St John Ambulance attended the scene and man's body was taken to Augusta hospital at about 1pm.

Police say there are no suspicious circumstances and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

The fisherman is the second person within two months to die while attempting to catch abalone in the waters off WA.

In November, a 20-year old was swept out to sea in treacherous conditions while on an abalone hunt north of Perth.

The Malaysian man was caught in a strong rip in Yanchep Lagoon, 55 kilometres north of Perth, and was swept away.

That group was searching for the expensive delicacy on the first day of the heavily restricted recreational fishing season.

The disaster triggered calls for metropolitan abalone fishing spots to be closed in dangerous weather.

GPS to track WA's worst sex predators

WA's most dangerous sex offenders will be monitored with GPS trackers from January 1. Source: The Courier-Mail

THE new year will bring new powers to allow West Australian authorities to electronically monitor the state's most dangerous sex offenders.

Among several pieces of controversial new legislation to come into force in the state on January 1 or just after, electronic monitoring will become a standard condition of supervision orders for dangerous sexual offenders released from custody.

Electronic monitoring via a GPS system will also apply to dangerous sexual offenders who have already been released and are currently on supervision orders, with the new powers due to come into effect from February.

The $6 million system will only be used in Perth initially, with a regional phase-in scheduled later in the year.

Meanwhile, changes to inheritance laws in WA will mean stepchildren will for the first time be able to challenge the wills of step-parents if they feel they have been inadequately provided.

Bringing the state in line with the rest of the country, a stepchild will now be able to challenge a will based on a claim there had been failure to provide adequate or proper provision in the estate of the dead step-parent.

And after rushing through the required legislation, WA will impose an R18+ classification on violent computer games - with $5000 fines for selling an R18+ games to a minor, a $2000 fine for demonstrating an R18+ game in a public place, and a $500 fine for shops who keep an R18+ game alongside other games.

Also in the new year, fines for cigarette butt littering will more than double from $75 to $200, while a new commercial tenancy bill will mean landlords having to disclose more information to small business owners, while preventing them from passing on certain legal charges to potential tenants.

CHANGES TO COME INTO EFFECT IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA FROM JANUARY 1, 2013:
- GPS tracking of dangerous sex offenders will begin on February 1 2013.
- New R18+ video game category comes into effect for violent or explicit games.
- New littering legislation raises fines for those caught disposing of cigarette butts.
- New laws allows stepchildren of a deceased to make a claim on the estate.
- Tenancy rights of small business will improve, with landlords warned not pass on legal charges to tenants.
