Labor claims 4000 new jobs from Metronet

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 16 Februari 2013 | 21.51

WA Labor Leader Mark McGowan says Metronet will create 4000 jobs. Picture: Alf Sorbello Source: PerthNow

NEARLY 4000 jobs would be created by Labor's $3.8 billion Metronet public transport plan, Opposition Leader Mark McGowan claimed today.

Mr McGowan -- who has stamped a major point of difference in the election campaign by pledging to find some savings for Metronet by building Perth's stadium at Subiaco rather than Burswood -- said the jobs would come from constructing the system and in associated supply industries.

He said Labor based its 3900 jobs estimate on the construction of  WA's southern rail links and ``construction activity of  rail links in Victoria and South Australia''.

``We think it (the figure) is actually an under-estimate,'' he said.

``The Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the RAC all estimate the (road) congestion costs businesses money in Western Australia.

``I want to make the life of small businesses and large businesses easier, to help them create jobs.

``Our Metronet plan is going to fix congestion in our suburbs and make our city more liveable.''

He renewed a promise made on Friday to have Labor's transport plan costed by Treasury officials, saying he would meet them tomorrow, and that ``it won't be long'' before costings were done.

This came after Transport Minister Troy Buswell released on Friday the Public Transport Authority documents he said had formed the basis for the WA Government's estimate that Metronet would cost $6.4 billion, more than $2 billion above Labor's figure.

``(But) when will the Premier and  Mr Buswell be handing over their rail plans to Treasury for costing?'' Mr McGowan asked at yesterday morning's media conference to announce the extra jobs.

Labor's plan includes the establishment of rail lines to Perth Airport and Ellenbrook and northern and southern suburbs circle lines.

Mr McGowan has said that by building the stadium, which is currently costed at about $1 billion, at Kitchener Park taxpayers would save $250 million and still have the venue by 2018.

He has also said savings would also be found for Labor's transport plan by ``re-allocating taxpayers' money identified for the Oakajee project and deferring the new museum project''.

Caviar simply invincible

Black Caviar shows she still has it as she storms to an easy win in her first race in eight months.

Black Caviar smashes track record as she notches third consecutive Lightning Stakes to record 23rd win.

BLACK Caviar is back with a boom. Bigger, better - and faster - than ever.

In a comeback after a seven-month break, the champion mare blitzed her rivals in the race named in her honour, the Black Caviar Lightning, and broke the track record that has stood for 25 years.

WIN A SHARE IN A RACEHORSE

It is the first time the world's highest-rated sprinter has broken a track record - an indication of her power and potency now.

GALLERY: CHAMPION TO THE PEOPLE

On a day dominated by expectation, emotion and eventual exhilaration, Black Caviar:

SET a track record of 55.42sec, beating Special's best time of 55.5sec set in 1988;

BECAME the first galloper to win the Lightning for three consecutive years;

TOOK her record to 23 consecutive wins;

PASSED $7 million in prizemoney;

REGISTERED her 13th Group 1 win, equalling Sunline and Tie The Knot, to be only one shy of Kingston Town;

SPEARHEADED trainer Peter Moody's Lightning trifecta.

The mare wasn't flash out of the barriers, but immediately took control.

After an initial 200m in 13.62sec, she ran 10.37sec for the next 200m to have her rivals under pressure, and then scooted clear with her next 200m in 10.21sec.

Jockey Luke Nolen, still haunted by almost losing at Royal Ascot in Britain at her last run in June, resisted the temptation to ease her down, as is her normal practice.

This time he "gave her a squeeze" and she ran the next 200m in 10.17sec before finishing off the final 200m in 11.05sec.

It was breath-taking, even for Moody, Victoria's leading and hardened trainer.

"I said to my girls that this is the first time I have been so nervous. I'm a bit emotional," he said with trembling hands.

"You always worry. You are on a hiding to nothing.

"To come back, do that, break the record, makes you lost for words.

"It could be her best career performance, given the time she ran."

Nolen was beaming after the race, putting to rest his "brain fade" in the final stages of the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Ascot.

"I got too much of a kick in the a--- in Ascot for dropping my hands, so I gave her a squeeze to make sure she went to the line," he said.

"At Flemington, it's so big and with the wind and the grandstand, you don't get a real appreciation of how fast you are going."

The champ, who started the $1.10 favourite, and was supported by almost every one of the 27,047 fans, defeated Moment Of Change ($21) by two-and-a-half lengths, with a further three-and-a-quarter lengths to Moody's other runner, Golden Archer ($41).

Black Caviar is likely to head to the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on March 15.

Her effort - and she still has improvement in her - had others gob-smacked.

Robert Smerdon, who sees her daily at Caulfield and who marvels at her physique and unblemished record, said simply: "She is something else."

David Hayes was smiling broadly when he said of Black Caviar breaking Special's record, set under the guidance of his father Colin: "Bugger. What was Luke doing pushing her out like that to break the record?"

Punters continued to support the champ and took bundles off the bookies again.

Corporate bookie sportsbet.com.au reported one bet of $500,000 at $1.10 and another $300,000 at $1.06. Others were also hit savagely by those who have never failed to collect on her appearances.

While all the attention was on Black Caviar, the effort of Moment Of Change was exceptional. He was having his first look at Flemington in preparation for the Newmarket Handicap (1200m) on March 9.

He chased determinedly and bookies immediately slashed his price from $8.50 into $4.20. Black Caviar is the $2.50 favourite for the handicap, but is unlikely to start.

Toddlers take over Scitech

Chloe Taylor blows bubbles with Theatre and Events Co-ordinator Renae Sayers. Picture: Will Russell Source: PerthNow

SCITECH has become a war zone of wide-eyed toddlers, furry baby animals, talking puppets, giant bubbles and hundreds of coloured balls in the battle to keep kids minds' curious.

The science education centre's annual Toddlerfest, which attracts an average of 1000 toddlers every day, provides exciting learning activities for babies and kids up to the age of five.

Scitech chief executive Alan Brien said children could sing and dance with the Kangaroo Creek Gang and puppet shows, pat baby animals, create play-dough creations and explore shapes by blowing unusual bubbles.

"This event is the perfect opportunity to highlight the long-term benefits of stimulating a child's learning at an early age," Mr Brien said.

"From following the movement of a ball to solving a puzzle, the range of activities are proven to enhance a child's learning and encourage young developing minds."

Representatives from specialists groups will be on hand with interactive displays to educate and inform parents about a range of services available for babies and toddlers.

Doubleview mum Carly Starcevich said her two-year-old daughter Teisha Young loved going to Scitech every month to see new displays and play in the children's area.

"There's nowhere else in Perth like here," Ms Starcevich said. "Kids can learn different things instead of just playing with the same old toys."

Scitech's Toddlerfest runs until 24 February at City West every day of the week, with free entry for children under the age of three. For more information, go to www.scitech.org.au or call 9215 0700.

History of everything in 90 minutes

A History of Everything is a good use of time. Picture: Brett Boardman Source: PerthNow

IF you were to condense the defining events of the past 14 billion years into just 90 minutes, where would you start?

The director of A History of Everything begins at the present day and presses rewind, taking the audience on a trip through the passage of time from a world dominated by Google and viral videos back through wars and genocides, empires and colonies, to a time when human life had not yet begun and there was just a tiny blue planet orbiting the sun.

Belgium-based theatre collective Ontroerend Goed was commissioned for the show by the Sydney Theatre Company, which of course counts starlet Cate Blanchett and husband Andrew Upton as artistic directors.

With a cast of just seven performers, the actors work across a two-dimensional map of the world spread across the stage.

Armed with ingenious props, the performers flit from continent to continent to depict moments in time. A squirter bottle is employed when there is a flood, and a toy gun is used for assassinations.

When we settle in to see the show at the State Theatre Centre, it is February 15, 2013.

We're informed the Perth Wildcats are playing, and a meteor has hit Russia, injuring more than 1000 people.

Times moves backwards quickly, chaotically, as the world's population clocks backwards from 7 billion.

The death of Apple creator Steve Jobs rates a mention, as does Rebecca Black's viral hit "Friday".

A terrible Aussie accent is employed for Julia Gillard's famous misogyny speech.

"I did not have sexual relations with that woman," bellows President Bill Clinton from America in 1998.

As the 20th century ticks over to the 19th century, time is slower, less is happening.

The world's population is smaller, religion plays a bigger part.

When we get to a few million years ago, the earth looks very different.

A few billion years ago, and human life is nowhere to be seen.

There is no denying the show has some very profound moments.

There is nothing like a glimpse of the entire history of the universe that gives you a sense of awe at the journey of humanity and the very small part you play in it.

It's a brilliant concept, and was executed exceptionally well.

While there were some slower moments, and the Big Bang was surprisingly underwhelming, the performance offered an interesting perspective at how we got to where we are today.

The history of everything in under two hours. It's a good use of time.

* A History of Everything runs until Feb 22 at the State Theatre Centre of WA. Visit perthfestival.com.au for tickets and information.

Attempted murder accused fought with a gun

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 15 Februari 2013 | 21.51

A MAN accused of trying to kill his friend has admitted to confronting him with a loaded gun in his home while arguing over drugs.

Mark Raymond Hinchliffe is on trial in the Supreme Court for the attempted murder of his friend and workmate Scott Williams.

Mr Hinchliffe is accused of slitting Mr Williams' throat on May 8, 2011 and also deliberately shooting a gun at him during a drunken fight, hours after the pair went searching for bikies in Rockingham.

Mr Hinchliffe appeared in the witness box today and maintained that he cut Mr Williams by accident while trying to defend himself from an attack.

However, the court was also told by Mr Hinchliffe that he loaded a gun and tried forcing his friend into holding it.

Mr Hinchliffe denied Mr Williams' earlier allegations that the two were searching for bikies after Mr Hinchliffe spoke on the phone to a outlaw motorcycle gang president who called him a "piece of s***."

He said they were looking for his on-again, off-again girlfriend Concetta and he was getting "frustrated" because Mr Williams was not staying in the car like he told him to, and got into a fight with a security guard.

Eventually the pair went back to Mr Hinchliffe's home where Mr Williams suggested they buy drugs from another workmate.

They started arguing and Mr Hinchliffe said the two had made a "pact" to stop using drugs.

"I told him he was a junkie," Mr Hinchliffe said.

Mr Williams then punched Mr Hinchliffe in the face, Mr Hinchliffe retaliated and eventually swung a "flurry" of punches sending Mr Williams backwards into furniture.

Mr Hinchliffe said he then went to bed to "calm down" while Mr Williams cleaned up his own blood, but came back out when he heard Mr Williams talking and asked who he was on the phone to.

He said his friend started asking for a gun so he could get the drugs and Mr Hinchliffe said he would not give the gun to Mr Williams, but eventually went back to the bedroom, loaded his 25 calibre semi-automatic 'baby brown' and took it out to Mr Williams telling him, "let's see what you've got."

Mr Hinchliffe said a fight broke out again, he hit Mr Williams on the top of his head with the butt of the gun, causing it to fire into the ceiling.

In a panic, he said he hid the gun in a ute in a neighbour's yard, came back and was confronted by Mr Williams, and while trying to defend himself, grabbed a knife and spun around.

He said he did not even realise he had cut Mr Williams, but did hear a "slitting sound."

While under cross examination, prosecutor Laura Christian said there were phone records that showed Mr Hinchliffe repeatedly called the number of the bikie president that night and he was looking for retaliation.

When Hinchliffe could not find any bikies to fight, he continued to get angry at his friend and deliberately tried to hurt him in anger.

She also suggested to Mr Hinchliffe that he did not have time to hide the gun and slit Mr Williams' throat straight after.

Mr Hinchliffe repeatedly denied Ms Christian's allegations.

The trial will continue on Monday.

A bushfire with the potential to threaten homes and lives is raging through Australind, near Bunbury in WA.

A BUSHFIRE which had the potential to threaten homes and lives in Australind, near Bunbury has been contained.

A bushfire advice alert is now in place for people between Marriott Road and Treasure Road, east of Old Coast Road, and for people north of the intersection of Old Coast Road and the Australind Bypass in the Leschenault area, 6km north of Australind in the Shire of Harvey.

The fire that started near Rosamel Road at 2.30pm on Friday has now been fully contained.

Fire crews will work throughout the night to strengthen containment lines.

There is no longer any threat to lives or homes but there is a lot of smoke in the area that will impact the Old Coast Road.

The bushfire is fully contained but there are unburnt pockets within the containment lines which will continue to burn overnight and on Saturday.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

Further south in Kin Kin, a "watch and act'' warning remains in place for a bushfire that was sparked on Tuesday afternoon by lightning strikes and has burnt through 1232 hectares.

Police discovered human remains in a burnt out shack in Kin Kin on Friday.

The warning also applies to the Andrew and Cardac state forests in the shires of Manjimup and Nannup.

The fires in these areas have been contained but are not under control.

And on Perth's northeastern fringes, a ``watch and act'' warning has been downgraded to an "advice'' alert for people in Gibbard Place, Clarkson Road and Taylor Road in the eastern part of Bullsbrook.

The fire was reported at 2.34pm  and about four hectares of grassland has been burnt.

There is no threat to lives or homes but there is a lot of smoke in the area.

WA bears the butt of cigarette offence

WESTERN Australia has a problem with their butts - too many are being tossed by irresponsible smokers.

The 2012 Rubbish Report has highlighted some alarming facts about the state of the environment in WA, a state dealing with unprecedented hot temperatures this summer.

More butts were removed by volunteers on Clean Up Australia Day than any other
rubbish items – reflecting 20 per cent of the top 10 items collected, up an astounding 13 per cent on the previous year.

The good news is the amount of glass reported was down to 14 per cent from 40 in
2011, although even at that quantity it can still pose a fire hazard.

The report shows WA also has a problem when it comes to caring for its renowned long coastline and spectacular beaches.

Not only was 30 per cent of the total rubbish collected along the coastline, beach and coastal sites recorded the highest average number of rubbish items per site at 1477, a staggering increase from the average item count of 252 in 2011.

Roadways and parks each made up 20 per cent of the state's total rubbish removed, both site types recording a significant increase in their average rubbish item count.

Plastics and miscellaneous items made up more than 50 per cent of rubbish reported in 2012.

Miscellaneous items increased by 15 per cent and plastics by three per cent.

Beverage containers made up 30 per cent of the whole rubbish count and 51 per cent of the top 10 items.

Ian Kiernan AO, Chairman and Founder of Clean Up Australia Day, spoke out about the findings in Perth today.

"Recent bush fires and floods around the country really bring home how important it is for us to take more responsibility for our local environment," he said.

"It's hard enough coping with the clean up required when nature hurls its challenges at us without also having to clean up after litter-bugs and illegal dumpers."

"It is extremely worrying to see such a high increase in the percentage of miscellaneous items recorded by volunteers. Cigarette butts are the main culprit – I am disgusted that people seem to think our environment is a giant ashtray."

"I am equally disturbed by the prevalence of beverage containers in the environment when they
can so easily be captured and recycled."

"Beverage related containers took out four of the top 10 most common rubbish items in this state in 2012.

"This is a disgrace when a viable solution, such as a container refund scheme which will turn these beverage containers from rubbish into a resource, is staring us in the face."

West Aussies can turn careless littering and rubbish dumping around – and you can get started by taking part in Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 3 March.

Over the past 23 years, volunteers have donated more than 25 million hours, removing an estimated 272,500 tonnes of rubbish for more than 137,500 sites across the country. But with every Australian still producing approximately 2 tonnes of garbage a year, we still have a long way to go.

Olympian 'shot and killed' girlfriend in mistaken identity

PARALYMPIC and Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend, it has been reported.

Pistorius allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend in the early hours of Thursday morning, apparently after thinking she was an intruder, South African news site Beeld reported.

Beeld has named the victim as Reeva Steenkamp, a model who had appeared in FHM magazine.

The pair first appeared in public at the South African sports awards in November last year.

Police spokesman Katlego Mogale said a "26-year-old man had been taken into custody for shooting a 30-year-old woman".

Mogale could not confirm if the suspect was Pistorius, saying his identity would be revealed only once he appears in court later on Thursday.

"The deceased was shot four times and died on the scene. It is believed that she was the girlfriend of the accused," said Mogale.

The shooting took place in a house inside an upmarket security compound in Silverlakes, outside Pretoria, he said. Pistorius lives in the compound.

A car carrying her body just left Silver Woods Estate where Pistorius lives but media are not allowed in the estate, Beeld has reported.

Steenkamp's friends took to Twitter to express their sadness.

Known as the Blade Runner, Pistorius has won six Paralympic gold medals including two at London 2012.

A double below-the-knee amputee since childhood who runs on J-shaped carbon fibre prostheses, Pistorius made history in 2012 when he became the first double leg amputee to compete in the Olympics.

He took up running at the age of 16 and was the first double amputee to run in the Olympics and reached the 400 semi-finals in London 2012.

Most recently he stirred up controversy at the London Games after losing the T44 200m title - a event he was the strong favourite in.

The 25-year-old claimed he was at a disadvantage because his fellow competitors were "a lot taller" and he was unable to compete with their stride length

The South African later apologised for the remarks.

Last year Time Magazine named him as one of the world's 100 most influential people.

Almost six million South Africans have guns, and the nation has one of the world's highest gun ownership rates at 12.7 firearms per 100 people.

Pistorius lives in Pretoria, which was recently named one of the most dangerous places in the country when it comes to house robberies.

A recent report named the city as one of the top 20 most dangerous and violent areas to live in.

The capital also has four suburbs in the 10 most dangerous places to live in South Africa when it comes to attempted murder, rape, street robberies and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (assault GBH).

Pistorius is reportedly in police custody and will appear in court this Thursday in South Africa.

Pretoria is nine hours behind Australian Eastern Daylight Time.

Olympian on murder charge after shooting model girlfriend

Paralympian Oscar Pistorius has allegedly shot his girlfriend dead after mistaking her for a burglar.

PARALYMPIC superstar Oscar Pistorius has been charged with the murder of his girlfriend who was shot inside his home in South Africa, a stunning development in the life of a national hero known as the Blade Runner for his high-tech artificial legs.

Reeva Steenkamp, a model who spoke out on Twitter against rape and abuse of women, was shot four times in the predawn hours in the home, in a gated community in the capital, Pretoria, police said.

Hours later after undergoing police questioning, Pistorius left a police station accompanied by officers. He looked down as photographers snapped pictures, the hood on his grey workout jacket pulled up, covering most of his face. His court hearing was originally scheduled for Thursday afternoon local time but has been postponed until Friday to give forensics investigators time to carry out their work, said Medupe Simasiku, a spokesman for the prosecution.

Police said there had "previously been incidents at the home of Mr Oscar Pistorius". Police in South Africa do not name suspects in crimes until they have appeared in court but police spokesperson Brigadier Denise Beukes said that Pistorius was at his home at the time of the death of Steenkamp and "there is no other suspect involved".

"Yes there are witnesses and there have also been interviews this morning," Brigadier Beukes told reporters outside the gated complex where Pistorius lived. "We are talking about neighbours and people that heard things that happened earlier in the evening and when the shooting took place."

Police said that earlier reports that Steenkamp may have been mistaken for a burglar by Pistorius did not come from the police. Several local media outlets had initially reported that the shooting may have been accidental.

"It would be very premature and very irresponsible of me to say what actually has happened," Brigadier Beukes said. "There have been allegations. We are not sure."

Brigadier Beukes also said there had been previous incidents and "allegations of a domestic nature" at the home of the Olympic star and double-amputee runner, who is one of South Africa's and the world's most famous sportsmen and made history at the London Games last year by being the first double-amputee runner to compete at the Olympics.

"I'm not going to elaborate on it but there have been incidents (at Pistorius' home)," Brigadier Beukes said.

Capacity Relations, a talent management firm, earlier named model Steenkamp as the victim of the shooting. Police spokeswoman Lt Col Katlego Mogale told The Associated Press that officers received a call around 3am after the shooting.

A 9 mm pistol was recovered and a murder case opened against Pistorius.

Lt Col Mogale said when police arrived they found paramedics trying to revive a 30-year-old woman, who had been shot four times. Lt Col Mogale, who was speaking from the scene, said the woman died at the house.

Police have still not released the name of the woman, but the publicist for Steenkamp confirmed in a statement that the model was dead.

"We can confirm that Reeva Steenkamp has passed away," Steenkamp's publicist Sarit Tomlinson said. "We are in communication with people on the scene, please wait for official statements, as there is too much speculation at this moment in time. We will provide further information as soon as we are able to provide accurate information as to what transpired.

"Our thoughts and prayers go to the Steenkamp family, who have asked to have their privacy respected during this difficult time, everyone is simply devastated. She was the kindest, sweetest human being; an angel on earth and will be sorely missed.

Tomlinson said Steenkamp, known simply as Reeva, was one of FHM's 100 Sexiest Women in the World for two years running, appeared in countless international and national advertisements and was one of the celebrity contestants on Tropika Island of Treasure, filmed in Jamaica.

On Twitter, she tweeted messages urging women to stand up against rape alongside her excitement about Valentine's Day. "What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow?" she tweeted. "It should be a day of love for everyone."

Lt Col Mogale and Brigadier Beukes said the victim's family had not yet identified the body.

Pistorius made history in London last year when he became the first double-amputee track athlete to compete in the Olympic Games, propelling him to the status of an athletics superstar.

Having had both his legs amputated below the knee before his first birthday because of a congenital condition, he campaigned for years to be allowed to compete against able-bodied athletes. Having initially been banned because of his carbon fibre blades - which critics said gave him an unfair advantage - he was cleared by sport's highest court in 2008 and allowed to run at the top events.

He competed in the 400 meters and on South Africa's 4x400 relay team at the London Games, making history after having his selection confirmed on South Africa's team at the very last minute. He also retained his Paralympic title in the 400 meters in London.

Pistorius was to race in Australia for the first time at the Sydney Track Classic on March 9 and in Perth seven days later.

Athletics Australia CEO Dallas O'Brien said he was unaware how the reported shooting of his girlfriend would impact on his planned tour.

"Obviously we have been made aware of the tragic news story developing in South Africa around Oscar Pistorius and the reported shooting of his girlfriend,'' he said.

"Clearly, all the details around this incident are still coming to light, and for this reason we have no information at this time about how this affects Oscar's plans."

South Africa's Sports Confederation and Olympic committee released a statement saying they had been "inundated" with requests for comment but were not in a position to give out any details of the shooting.

"SASCOC, like the rest of the public, knows no more than what is in the public domain, which is there has been an alleged fatal shooting on the basis of a mistaken identity and an apparent assumption of a burglary," the South African Olympic committee said. "The organization is in no position to comment on the incident other than to say our deepest sympathy and condolences have been expressed to the families of all concerned."

The International Paralympic Committee also said it wouldn't comment in detail apart from offering its condolences to the victim's family.

"This is a police matter, with a formal investigation currently underway," the IPC said. "Therefore it would be inappropriate for the IPC to comment on this incident until the official police process has concluded. The IPC would like to offer its deepest sympathy and condolences to all families involved in this case."

South Africa has some of the world's highest murder rates, with nearly 50 people killed each day in the nation of 50 million. It also has high rates of rape, other assaults, robbery and carjackings.

UN statistics show South Africa has the second highest rate of shooting deaths in the world, second only to Colombia.

Pretoria is nine hours behind Australian Eastern Daylight Time.

'Axe the Tampon Tax' issue rises again

FEDERAL politicians are again under pressure to scrap the GST on tampons, with thousands of people signing an online petition calling for the 10 per cent levy to be dropped.

Perth student Sophie Liley launched the petition on change.org on Tuesday and within 36 hours had gained 15,000 signatures of support from men and women.

Labor had campaigned to have GST on tampons scrapped in 2000.

In September 2001 the Senate passed a bill exempting the products, breast pumps, funeral services, and caravan park and boarding house rents from GST - but the changes were vetoed in the House of Representatives.

The latest "Axe the Tampon Tax" petition says most women will end up being taxed $1000 over their lifetime for sanitary products and calls on Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott to make scrapping GST on tampons a key 2013 election pledge.

"It's completely outrageous that women are forced to pay the GST on tampons because they're labelled as 'luxury' items - particularly when condoms, lubricants, incontinence pads and sunscreen are GST free," Ms Liley said.

"A government that charges women the GST as a direct consequence of their basic biology is a country that is fundamentally sexist.

"It sends the message that in this day and age, despite having our first female prime minister, we are okay with continued sexism in this country."

The issue has also gained support on social media sites, with plenty of people posting Twitter messages linked to the petition, with the hashtag #bloodyoutrage.

The issue also arose in 2009 after supermarket chain Coles reduced the price of female hygiene products by 10 per cent to offset the GST.

Coles said at the time it was removing the equivalent cost of the tax because tampons should be treated the same as basic food, education and medical services.

But the government refused to budge, with the then assistant treasurer Nick Sherry commenting: "The government has made a commitment to maintain the existing GST arrangements."

Homestead lost as fires sweep SW

Two properties have been destroyed in a raging fire in Bridgetown.

A heritage listed homestead built in the 19th century is one of three properties destroyed by a bushfire in our South West.

THE owner of the historic Southampton Homestead, which was gutted by bushfires that swept through Western Australia's southwest, has thanked friends and neighbours who risked their lives trying to save the property.

The homestead was destroyed late yesterday by fires that were started by lightning and burned through Southampton, Greenbushes, the western part of Bridgetown, Hester Brook, Wandillup and Maranup.

With 200 firefighters still battling the blazes this evening, a watch and act alert remains in place for the town of Greenbushes and areas south to Dalgarup plantation in the shires of Donnybrook-Balingup, Bridgetown-Greenbushes and Nannup.

Email your fire pictures to PerthNow: readerpics@perthnow.com.au

A previous emergency warning has been downgraded, even though the bushfires remain a serious threat to lives and homes.

Jeff Pow, the owner of the 150 year-old Victorian-Georgian homestead situated on the banks of the Blackwood River, was in London on business when the fire began.

"We were ... unable to defend or assist the gallant firefighting efforts of friends and neighbours, who have put their lives on the line fighting to save our home,'' Mr Pow said in a statement.

"As new farmers, we are also deeply distressed by the injuries sustained by the many varieties of animals on the farm and at a dream literally gone up in flames.

"Our loss is compounded by the loss to the West Australian public of a irreplaceable historical treasure.''

It is the second historic homestead to be destroyed in the bushfire season, after Wallcliffe House was burned down in the recent Margaret River fires.

"We hope this sends a clear message to the state and federal government heritage agencies to act with haste and to provide deluge fire defence systems for the remaining colonial properties before they share our fate,'' Mr Pow said.

Meanwhile, a watch and act warning was also released for the Kin Kin area, and Andrew and Cardac state forests in the shires of Manjimup and Nannup.

Several fires started in the area at about 4pm on Tuesday from lightning strikes.

Greenbushes Primary School and Balingup Primary School were closed on Thursday but will reopen on Friday.

Western Power said electricity had been restored to more than 400 properties that were without power overnight.

About 25 properties in and around Southampton may be without electricity for several days after the fires destroyed part of the network.

Western Power believes the fires may have destroyed about 50 wood poles, but crews haven't been able to get into the area to assess the damage because it is still unsafe.

The Department of Environment and Conservation advises that smoke from as many as 20 bushfires in the southwest over the past two days will affect the coast south of Perth and the metropolitan area.

The smoke is expected to clear late this afternoon as the sea breeze comes in but could build up again overnight.

People with conditions exacerbated by smoke should take precautions in line with their medical advice.

Bushfire ADVICES remain in place for people in:

-The area bounded by Hay Road, Nannup-Balingup Road, and South West Highway, excluding Balingup townsite in the Shires of Donnybrook-Balingup and Bridgetown-Greenbushes.
-The townsites of Bridgetown and Balingup including the area north of Brockman Highway and east of South West Highway from Hester townsite north to Balingup in the Shires of Donnybrook-Balingup, Bridgetown-Greenbushes and Nannup.
-East of Dalgarup National Park and plantation, north of Brockman Highway, east of Maranup Ford Road and south of Greenbushes townsite and minesite in the Shires of Donnybrook-Balingup, Bridgetown-Greenbushes and Nannup.

Bushfire WATCH AND ACTS have been issued for people:

• in the Kin Kin area bounded by Muir Highway, Wheatley Coast Road, Sutton Road, Beard Road, and Deeside Road, 25km east of Manjimup in the Shire of Manjimup. The townsite of Quinninup is not under threat.
• near Andrew State Forest near the intersection of Austin and Drew Roads 20km south-east of Nannup in the Shire of Nannup
• near Cardac State Forest near the intersection of Cardac and Dwyer roads 7km south-east of Manjimup in the Shire of Manjimup

Miners angry at 'cancer' slur on FIFOs

A new report says FIFO workers are creating housing shortages, driving up real estate prices and straining already limited public services. Source: PerthNow

HOMES selling for 10 times their real value, McDonald's workers flown in for shifts and primary school teachers who can't afford to live in their own town.

This is the impact of fly-in fly-out workers on rural towns, a federal parliamentary inquiry has found, and it's so serious one regional mayor has described the practice as "the cancer of the bush''.

The house Regional Australia Committee found FIFO and drive-in, drive-out (DIDO) practices overlook locals seeking jobs in the mining boom taking place on their doorstep.

As locals miss out, the influx of temporary workers is creating housing shortages, driving up real estate prices and straining already limited public services.

Independent MP Tony Windsor, who chaired the committee which handed down its report this evening, said the practice was threatening to "hollow out'' the future of country towns.

"If that becomes the norm, we do just have a lot of inland communities that are essentially camps of workers,'' he told reporters in Canberra.

"One of the great things that country communities have right across Australia is they still have a sense of community and it is under threat in some of these area.''

The report makes 14 suggestions to the mining industry and 21 recommendations to the federal government, including reviewing the fringe benefits tax arrangements for FIFO workers.

Mr Windsor stressed the report was not anti-mining, but calls for resource firms to value rural Australians and their towns.

The committee is asking companies to look at countries like Canada, where there is a better relationship between resource firms and the populations of the local towns they work near.

But representatives of the mining and resources sector have warned some of the recommendations could have devastating affects on business.

Association of Mining and Exploration Companies chief executive Simon Bennison said removing the fringe benefits tax would make no difference to the issues identified in the report.

"AMEC and its members believe changes to the FBT exemption will affect the economics of many projects and cost cutting initiatives will need to be implemented. This could result in further job losses in the future," he said.

"Now is not the time to be adding any more costs onto industry."

WA REACTS WITH CAUTION

Chamber of Minerals and Energy of WA chief executive Reg Howard-Smith said politicians needed to be careful the recommendations did not increase the cost of doing business - especially given the high cost of doing business in WA.

"Unfortunately we are becoming a less attractive place to develop resources projects when compared with global resource rich nations and investment may be driven to other, lower cost, regions because of additional layers of taxation and charges which are continuing to drive up cost for doing business," he said.

"Attraction and retention of employees would be severely impacted if companies attempted to force residential employment on their employees."

Mr Howard-Smith said FIFO was a choice for workers and helped keep the labour market competitive.

"FIFO and residential employment are complementary, not supplementary approaches in a total workforce management package," he said

Premier Colin Barnett said FIFO would always be a part of the WA workforce because there would always be mines in isolated locations.

WA Nationals MP Tony Crook said the report asked some poignant'' questions for the federal government.

He suggested a "royalties for regions'' fund to return to communities some of the wealth generated, much like the set-up in his home state.

Liberal MP Dan Tehan, who sat on the committee, said FIFO practices presented problems, but warned against making rash decisions that could risk mining profitability.

"If we just make mining less competitive ... I don't think that's going to improve the sector or regions overall,'' he said.

Australian Manufacturing Workers Union national president Andrew Dettmer said even towns like Gladstone in Queensland, which was built on mining, were now struggling under FIFO practices.

After-hours Gladstone resembled a "ghost town'', with locals forced to live 40km away and drive in to work every day to escape skyrocketing housing prices.

Scrapping the FBT exemptions would remove incentives for companies to use FIFO workers and encourage local hiring.

Mr Dettmer said in the past, mining companies were required to hire a certain number of locals and build a significant number of homes, houses and hospitals in towns.

"That was the price of doing business,'' he said. "It's unfortunate that that's no longer the case.''

SCEPTICISM OVER REPORT

Minerals Council of Australia chief executive Mitch Hooke said the report "should be treated with a deal of scepticism'', vowing to strongly oppose any changes to the tax treatment of FIFO.

Likening the practice to cancer would be offensive to FIFO workers, without whom some mines would not have enough staff to operate, Mr Hooke said.

"Mining and FIFO is not hollowing out the regions in which it operates. It is boosting incomes, attracting families and reducing unemployment,'' he said.

Some workers were moving to the regions permanently, he said, citing a KPMG study showed the population of Australia's mining regions had grown at 1.5 per cent per year in the five years to 2011, compared to 0.8 per cent for regional Australia more generally.

Australian Mines and Metals Association chief executive Steve Knott said FIFO and drive-in, drive-out working arrangements were as much driven by employee lifestyle choices as by resource companies' operational requirements.

Mr Knott also agreed with CMEWA that labour mobility was increasingly important for Australia's resource industry to compete on a global scale.

Communications Electrical Plumbing Union assistant national secretary Allen Hicks said FIFO may be essential during the labour-intensive construction phase, but the lives of these workers and their families were highly disrupted, so a better balance needed be struck.

Bushfire destroys two homes

Two properties have been destroyed in a raging fire in Bridgetown.

A bushfire burning out of control near Bridgetown has destroyed two homes. Picture: Nine News Source: PerthNow

MORE than 200 firefighters will work through the night to control a bushfire that has destroyed two homes in WA's South-West.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services confirmed this evening that a homestead in Southampton, to the north-west of Bridgetown, had burnt down.

A home about 900m away has also been destroyed by the fire, which was started yesterday by lightning strikes west of the Blackwood River in the town of Southampton.

At 7.55pm WST, an emergency warning remains in place for people in the townsites of Greenbushes, Hester Brook, Wandillup, Maranup and Southampton.

DFES says homes are under direct threat of fire now and people in this area are in danger and need to act immediately to survive.

Winds have swung around from the north-west to the south-west this evening, and authorities warn that homes in Greenbushes, north of Bridgetown, may be impacted by fire.

More than 200 firefighters are working to contain the fire, focusing on constructing containment lines on the north and north-eastern flank of the bushfire.

DFES states that six water bombers and two Type 1 helicopters were also assisting this afternoon but are unable to operate in the dark and and have been released. If required they will return at first light.

DFES estimates that about 1700 hectares have been burnt so far.

A watch and act alert is in place for people west of Greenbushes-Boyup Brook Road, Kendall Road, Winnejup Road, Wheatley Giblett Road and Carbanup Brook Road, and north of Glentulloch Road, including people in Bridgetown and Balingup.

The following roads are closed:
- Southampton Road between Hay Road and Maranup Ford Road,
- Maranup Ford Road between the mine site access road and Brockman Highway,
- Spring Gully Road between Greenbushes and Southampton Road.

A relocation point has been set up at Bridgetown Recreation Centre and people should leave via the South Western Highway towards Bridgetown and Manjimup.

Western Power has advised that some homes in the area may be without power, while the Education Department says Greenbushes Primary School will be closed tomorrow.

Earlier this afternoon, the fire broke containment lines and crossed a river, where it headed east towards the towns of Bridgetown and Greenbushes.

Another fire is burning south of Bridgetown and a watch and act alert has been issued for people in the Kin Kin area, about 25km east of Manjimup.

Seven other bushfires started from lightning strikes caused by an intensive thunderstorm yesterday afternoon but these blazes are now contained and under control.

WHAT TO DO:
• If the way is clear, leave now for a safer place.
• Do not wait and see, leaving at the last minute is deadly.
• There is ember attack ahead of the fire, so close all doors and windows, and turn off evaporative air conditioners, but keep water running through the system if possible.
• Do not rely on mains water pressure as it may be affected. However, if you have access to a water tank and plan to stay and defend start patrolling around your house and put out spot fires.
• If you cannot leave, you need to get ready to shelter in your home and actively defend it.
• If you are not at home, it is too dangerous now to return.
• People in the Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes that decide to leave are to place a green bag on their mail box or gate to advise fire fighters that they have left.

SAFER PLACE OF LAST RESORT:
If it is not safe to shelter in your home, a safer place you can go to is a local open space, shed, swimming pool, dam or building where you may go to seek shelter from a bushfire. This will give you some protection from the effects of a bushfire. Take water, woollen blankets and wear protective clothing.

TWO people have been killed on WA roads overnight, including one man who died after his car was hit by a speeding vehicle in Bicton which had been chased briefly by police.

In Bicton, witnesses say two men were attempting to elude police when the cars they were driving crashed at the intersection of Harris and Pembroke streets at Bicton last night, killing one of them instantly.

Police say the smash followed the earlier assault and robbery of a 50-year-old man at nearby Point Walter.

The dead man has been identified as a 28-year-old from Willagee. Police allege he was involved in the attack along with an 18-year-old man from Munster and that they fled the scene in different cars.

Bicton resident Stephen Pickford captured the smash on a video camera he had pointed at the intersection.

He said he had foreseen the tragedy because hoons frequently sped down the suburb's wide streets.

Police have since seized the footage.

"It was like an explosion,'' Mr Pickford told ABC radio.

Police alleged the two men had earlier assaulted the man at Point Walter before stealing his electric mountain bike.

The 18-year-old fled the scene in a Holden Commodore, while the 28-year-old drove off in a Holden Astra.

Police saw the Commodore and chased it briefly after an unsuccessful attempt to pull the driver over.

After the chase was aborted, the car wound through the back streets of Bicton and was spotted again.

The Commodore went through a stop sign and t-boned the Astra, police said.

It's understood officers engaged the Commodore in a second brief pursuit before the crash, but witnesses said they were driving in a controlled manner at a reasonable speed.

They said the crash was horrific, with the smashed Astra propelled 30 metres down the road before hitting four paperbark trees.

"The car basically disintegrated,'' Mr Pickford said.

He said the trees saved he and his wife's lives as they sat on their front verandah watching the drama unfold.

The Commodore careered 50-60 metres down the street after the impact before spinning around, he said.

The 18-year-old driver tried to run away but was chased by neighbours and pinned to the ground.

Residents had been calling for speed humps and roundabouts in the area for some time, Mr Pickford said.

"We knew this would happen,'' he said.

"People quite regularly go through that stop sign.''

The surviving man is expected to appear in Fremantle Magistrates Court later today charged with several offences including dangerous driving causing death and aggravated robbery.

DRIVER DIES IN STOLEN CAR

The second fatality overnight occurred just after 1am today in Darlington, about 20km east of Perth, when a Toyota Prado slammed into a tree and burst into flames on Great Eastern Highway near Burton Road.

The driver of the car died at the scene and has not yet been identified.

Police say the Prado had been stolen just hours earlier from a home in Morrison Road, Midvale, sometime after 11pm.

Police are trying to identify the driver of the vehicle and are asking anyone who may have seen the vehicle between 11pm on Tuesday and the time of the crash, or who has any information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Disgraced Foley could be heading home

Former Peel Health Campus chief Ashton Foley may be in Brisbane with her four children, her husband believes. Source: The Sunday Times

DISGRACED whistleblower Ashton Foley is in Brisbane with her four children, her husband believes.

Wayne Foley told PerthNow that his wife - who fled Victoria last Tuesday claiming she was going back to the United States to deal with outstanding fraud charges - "slipped up'' in a recent phone conversation about the time at her location.

"I believe she's in Brisbane because she said something about a time difference, she goes 'It's an hour behind' when she called me,'' he said.

"But she doesn't know anyone there (Queensland), no one. I just want my kids back, considering all this s..t. This has turned into astral dimensions.''

Mr Foley also said his wife could be heading back to Victoria in the next few days, where she had been living and working in recent months.

He also indicated he was considering legal action in the United States against relatives of Ms Foley whom he believed were behind what he called a false allegation in other media, that Ms Foley had been arrested for bigamy.

He said the allegation was "absolutely not true''.

It is believed police are seeking to question her over her providing allegedly false qualifications to her former employer Peel Health Campus, which itself is at the centre of an inquiry examining corruption allegations at the hospital.

Those qualifications helped land Ms Foley a $250,000 a year job last April at the hospital as its chief operating officer, which she quit in September over her concerns about the way the privately run, publicly funded campus operated.

She and others then testified in October to a Parliamentary committee that examined allegations of misconduct at the hospital centring around it overcharging the Health Department about $1.8 million for its operation and also alleged $200 "incentive'' payments given to emergency department doctors for admissions.

Both witness testimonies and documents dating back to 2010 were examined by the committee which in November recommended an independent inquiry be launched

An inquiry was then begrudgingly announced in December by the Premier and is being headed by Prof Bryant Stokes.

The Sunday Times and PerthNow nine days ago revealed Ms Foley was jailed in the US in 2008 for lying about being employed on a credit application.

She fled Victoria after revelations of her past continued to be published in the media last week, which also prompted her to resign from her new job as chief executive of a regional health service east of Melbourne.

The inquiry into Peel Health Campus is continuing.

PAUL Pyke, the Beechboro man who has been missing for three days after going quad-biking, has been found in bushland near Sawyers Valley.

Police confirm Mr Pyke was found just before 4pm by Tactical Response Group officers who were tracking his movements through bush land.

He was found conscious but dehydrated, and was immediately provided emergency first aid by those officers.

An emergency first aid team at the search command post was taken to his location, and he was airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment.

A search and rescue was launched for the 35-year-old man after he went missing on Sunday.

He had been last seen riding his blue quad bike on Gorrie Road in dense bush near Sawyers Valley, 40km east of Perth, at about 10am Sunday.

Mr Pyke was with two mates when he became separated from them about 12km south of the Great Eastern Highway on Sunday.

His bike was found this morning just off Yarra Road and tracks leading away from the bike were detected.

There had been fears for Mr Pyke's safety as the search resumed for a third day as temperatures rapidly climbed towards 40C.

State Emergency Service volunteers were stood down about 10pm last night so they could have a rest ready for another day of searching today.

Police Officers continued with patrols of the area overnight and a Police Air Wing (helicopter) searched overnight using a heat sensing camera.

State Emergency Service volunteers resumed the search at first light this morning.

Music teacher's shocking sexual acts at top high school

FORMER Christ Church music teacher admits molesting multiple young boys because he found them 'appealing' but thought he could keep his urges under control.

Lindsay William Hutchinson, 63, is on trial for committing six counts of carnal knowledge against nature, six counts of indecently dealing with a child, and three counts of unlawful and indecent assualt, for the repeated sexual abuse of a young student, between December 1983 and September 1985 in several places including country hotel rooms, a school music camp and a deanery.

Mr Hutchinson, who was the music director at Claremont's Christ Church Grammar School and organist at St George's Cathedral in the 1980s, has pleaded guilty to some of the charges, but has denied the more serious allegations, including rape.

Other witnesses during the trial have testified about inappropriate sexual touching and behaviour, including having photographs taken of them by Mr Hutchinson for a fake "speedo competition", but the allegations do not form part of the charges Mr Hutchinson is facing.

As the first defence witness in the District Court trial, the former teacher was called to give evidence this afternoon.

Mr Hutchinson told the jury he had worked in various schools in Melbourne, the UK, New Zealand and Perth as a teacher from 1974 to 1996, and all were boys' schools.

He took up a post as music director at Christ Church Grammar School in 1981, and in the several years that followed, was the conductor of the CCGS choir, the St George's Cathedral choir and created another choir, the Ad Hoc Chorale.

Mr Hutchinson told the court that during the first night of a music rehearsal camp in 1984, he went into the victim's dormitory and masturbated him under his pyjamas while standing next to the bunk bed. He said he left the room and came back about 40 minutes later to do the same.

Mr Hutchinson said he then carried the boy up to a staff bedroom and put him on a bed and masturbated the boy again, before carrying him back to his bunk bed.

"He seemed to be asleep," he said.

When defence lawyer Mara Barone put forward allegations of various other sexual acts committed, Mr Hutchinson denied them.

When Ms Barone asked Mr Hutchinson why he touched the boy, he replied: "I found him sexually appealing".

He admitted to masturbating the boy again the second night of the camp, but denied doing any other sexual acts.

Mr Hutchinson also admitted to touching the victim and another young boy during a sleepover at the St George's deanery.

He also said it was correct that the victim stayed over one night at his home, while his wife and child were there, but denied anything happened that night.

During a trip to a country town, Mr Hutchinson said he also touched the victim when he thought he was asleep.

He admitted to touching the victim and simulating sex with him during a choir trip to York in the mid-1980s.

"I just wanted to experiment with the sensation," he told the court.

Allegations of various sexual acts with his victims were put to Mr Hutchinson in the witness stand, but he denied all of them, saying he had masturbated the boys and simulated sex with one, but nothing more.

Ms Barone put allegations to Mr Hutchinson from a victim from the late-1970s who also claimed he was touched and was photographed in swimwear for a fake photo competition.

"That's correct," Mr Hutchinson told the court.

"He was a keen sportsman, he had a good physique. I was attracted to him."

He said he made up the story about a photo competition to lend the activity some "credibility", and also took photos of a couple of other boys.

He also admitted to touching a boy on the inner thigh during a trip to Tasmania and touching a youth's genitals on several occasions while driving him in his car.

Under cross-examination from prosecutor David Davidson, the former teacher said he first realised he was sexually attracted to young boys in the early 1970s at the first school he taught.

He agreed masturbating a child was inappropriate, but said he did not seek help because he thought his urges were controllable.

The cross-examination of Mr Hutchinson will continue before Judge Patrick O'Neal tomorrow.

As reported in The Sunday Times, a former Christ Church Grammar School student last week told the court he had been sexually abused by Mr Hutchinson and had told the school's chaplain and director of ethics Frank Sheehan.

The former student alleged Canon Sheehan told him to "forget about it and put it behind me and ... that I need to get on with my life".

Mr Sheehan is expected to be called as a defence witness later this week.

He was alleged to have been involved in activities that related to the collapse of a West Australian company.

Liberals' counter airport rail plan

A LIBERAL State Government has promised to build three new train stations bringing passengers to the front door of Perth Airport if it wins next months' election at a cost of almost $2 billion.

It all but guaranteed that a rail line would be built out to Perth Airport regardless of next month's election result, after Labor's Metronet project promised to do the same.

Under the Liberal's plan, three new train stations will be built along a new rail line, with stations to the east and west of the airport as well as underneath the existing main international terminal.

In announcing the major rail link project this morning, Premier Colin Barnett and Transport Minister Troy Buswell said the project would be completed by 2018 and would cost about $1.8 billion to build.

The new line will branch off the Midland train line at Bayswater station.

The two stations to the east and west of the airport will also have a combined total of 3000 car bays.

The eastern station will be located in Forrestfield and construction work would begin next year.

The Liberals will approach the Federal Government to help fund the project also.

"Every major city in the world needs a proper public transport system to its airport, Perth is no different, it's a rapidly growing city and our airport has become one of the busiest in Australia," Mr Barnett said, who conceded the proposal was high-priced.

"It's an expensive project, but it will provide reliable and direct passenger transfers from the city directly to the airport terminals."

Mr Buswell this morning took the time to lambast the Labor party's previously announced Metronet rail project

That project, announced back December, consists of over 75km of new rail track and dozens of new train stations as well as rail lines to Ellenbrook and Perth Airport.

"If you are going to have a railway line that reaches the airport, the station has to be within the precinct of the airport terminal," Mr Buswell said.

"Clearly, the Labor party rail plane is completely deficient in that regard."

But Opposition leader Mark McGowan hit back at the Liberal party's plan and its criticism of the Metronet project.

He labelled the Liberals' announcement a "hoax" and said they "cannot be trusted to build a rail line to Perth Airport."

"The Liberal Party will simply break this promise because they have no credibility on public transport," he said.

Today, Mr McGowan announced a $590 million plan to buy new rail cars and build a train depot for its Metronet network over eight years.

More than 200 new rail cars would be purchased over the next eight years as part of the plan.

"Over the past eight years, the number of people boarding Perth trains has doubled, from 31.1 million to 63 million, according to the Public Transport Authority," he said.

"The new trains will be new generation railcars, with state-of-the art technology and facilities."

THERE are no plans to suspend Perth's gas bus fleet despite two vehicles catching fire in two months.

A Transperth bus driver ordered about 20 passengers off a bus on Saturday afternoon when he saw a warning light on the dashboard.

The driver turned off the gas valve but the back of the bus soon caught fire.

It followed another incident on December 14 where a bus was engulfed in flames.

Transport Minister Troy Buswell on Sunday said there were no plans to suspend the fleet's 500 gas buses.

He said a report on the first bus fire was delayed because it was "difficult, bordering on impossible" to determine what caused the blaze.

"That bus was effectively reduced to molten metal and that's an issue," Mr Buswell said.

"Yesterday's fire wasn't as catastrophic for the vehicle, so I'm very hopeful that we'll be able to get a better understanding."

Mr Buswell said he had implemented a five-point plan that included an inspection of all buses before they go out on Monday, an increase from one to two inspections a week, an examination of the capacity to improve fire suppression systems, an investigation into the latest fire and a meeting with the drivers union and the Public Transport Authority.

"As a person who has driven buses in a prior life, I can understand why the drivers and our customers are concerned, that's why we've implemented this five point plan," he said.

Grab a slice of chaos at La Cucina dell'Arte

Brothers Danny and David Ronaldo star in La Cucina dell'Arte at Perth Festival. Source: PerthNow

A COMBINATION of slapstick, circus, and some seriously impressive pizza flipping moves makes this Perth Festival premiere a must-see.

Set in a gorgeous vintage tent complete with a barrel organ, rows of rickety wooden seating and an ornate chandelier dangling from the ceiling, La Cucina dell'Arte captures a chaotic pizzeria with the head chef trying desperately to serve customers as his hapless kitchen assistant bumbles alongside.

The show is the work of brothers Danny and David Ronaldo, who represent the sixth generation of a renowned circus family.

Years in the business have made them true performers, easily able to interact with the crowd and keep a very mixed audience laughing.

Using mainly acrobatic skills and expert comedic timing to weave the narrative, the two brothers kept up a frenetic pace as their "restaurant" turned into a scene of smashing plates and flying pizza dough.

They were undeniably charming and the involvement with the crowd really lifted the performance.

Though at some points it dragged, the show was entertaining and at times incited riotous laughter from a mix of punters that included primary school aged children through to grandparents, making it a great family outing.

However, vintage big-tops don't generally come equipped with air conditioning, and the sweltering summer heat on opening night turned the crowd into a sea of fanning programs.

Being squeezed into tight rows of narrow bench seating didn't help much either.

If you're fond of physical theatre and goofy gags, La Cucina dell'Arte is one for you.

And try to have dinner beforehand, or you will probably start to crave pizza.

* La Cucina dell'Arte runs until February 24 at Russell Square, Northbridge. Tickets from www.perthfestival.com.au.
